In the few last years, the State of Qatar has achieved a remarkable progress in developing women status and in promoting gender equality in many fields, where such pioneer progress enabled women to occupy many decision-making positions. The Qatari society witnessed a positive shift towards appreciating women roles and recognizing their qualifications to assume prominent leadership positions, practicing various professions and participate in the development process.
In spite of the particular governmental support to Qatari women, extended by His Highness Sheikh Hamad bin Khalifa Al-Thani, to participate in public life; as well as the exemplary leading role of Her Highness, Sheikha Mozza Bent Nasser in launching many local, regional and international initiatives and in presiding a number of local institutions; and her highness relentless encouragement to Qatari women to participate effectively in social development, still Qatari women occupy a very low percentage in the number of persons working in key mass media positions or influencing the decision making in mass media, whether in administrative or cultural positions in information establishments or as free article writers. Also, there is a slowdown in numbers of Qatari women joining professions related to mass media.
Through its five chapters, the study aims at diagnosing the actual position of women working in mass media field in the state of Qatar, defines the challenges facing women working in such field and suggest appropriate solutions for the same. In addition, the study has for objective to specify the governmental policies, measures and means carried out by the competent state authorities to support women work in mass media field. At the end, surveys to explore the opinion of the Qatari society in general, and Qatari women in particular, about working in mass media field, with a mention for actual media materials and programs addressed to family in general and to women in particular.
